Porting Your Business Number to Ruby

March 8th, 2024

Ruby is delighted to host your published business number for free. In addition to potentially eliminating your existing phone bill, this also unlocks some great features in our app like texting from your business number and the ability to spoof your cell phone’s outbound caller ID to display as your company number.

You'll also have control over call-forwarding at your fingertips. Using our app, you can choose to forward your published number to your Ruby account or directly to your cell phone if you'd prefer to take calls yourself at any given moment.

When Ruby hosts your phone number, we act as your phone provider for that specific number. It would live in our phone system and be linked directly to your Ruby account. There is no setup charge, nor any ongoing charges from Ruby. Your current carrier may charge you a small fee to release the number, but that is rare.

There are several things to consider when deciding if porting to Ruby is right for you:

  • Because Ruby is hosting your number virtually, the number won't be linked to a physical desk phone. You'll be using your cell as your primary phone for doing business.
  • You'll be able to eliminate your phone bill if you aren't using your phone provider for any additional services like fax, chat, extensions, or additional backline numbers.

If you ever cancel service, we're happy to port the number back to you to continue using as long as the account is in good financial standing, per our Terms of Use.

Ready to Get Started?
You can begin the porting process in three easy steps.

  1. Fill out a letter of authorization. This document will reflect your name, number, and account information for your current phone provider, and will need to be signed by the authorized user on your account. Download a copy of the letter of authorization here
  2. Gather a copy of your phone bill. It should exactly match your letter of authorization, and include your name, number and billing address.*
  3. Send it over to Ruby. Send those documents to the Customer Happiness team at staff@ruby.com and let us know you would like to port your number.

*Google charges a small fee to release a Google Voice number. Learn how to unlock and port your Google Voice number here.

Voila! You’re done.
It can take up to two to four weeks for your number to port to Ruby, but we’ll keep you informed during the process. Once your number ports, you’ll have access to a suite of sweet Ruby perks!
